Abstract

In the geographical literature refered to intraurban ecology, the concept of "latent dimensions" as the spatial structure basis of large cities is widely known. A number of studies have been able to establish that the social economic status as well as the family and ethnical status are the main factors which account for social-spatial differences in the population pattem within those cities. In this research which has analysed the social spatial changes in the greater Santiago area at a census
district level, for the intercensus period of 22 years from 1970 until 1992, has provided valuable information of the processes underlying these differences.
The results show that there has been an intensification of the intraurban social space, wich has resulted in the conformation of a highly segregated and non socialy and sustenaible city. This situation does not differ from the socioecological pattems identified for latinamerican metropolitan cities.
