Abstract

This essay presents an analytical framework to examine the economic relations between the countries of the North and the South, to facilitate positive analysis and contribute to the formulation of normative prescriptions to strengthen the desirable trends in the field of economic relations between them in the future. The possible economic and social typologies of the nations of the South are explored, since international economic ties differ in importance among the different groups of states. The central features of the political economy of the nations of the North, or developed countries, are examined. The fields of interaction between North and South are discussed below, followed by an analysis of the international markets for goods and factors. Finally, the implications of the preceding analysis for international aid and monetary reform are discussed.
