The essay examines the development of relationships between Latin America, the great powers and the global international system, with special reference to the United States, throughout the period during which Estudios Internacionales has spoken for Chilean and Latin American internationalists. It underscores the Latin American origin of many medium scale foreign policies of countries in the region, although in turn these depend on a global environment marked by great powers and global and transnational trends.
